Summary

The Audio-Visual Technician is responsible for setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting audio-visual equipment for various events and educational activities across the school district. This role supports school events, assemblies, meetings, and other related technology needs. The technician will work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate after-school events, conferences, and other scheduled activities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

AV Equipment Setup and Maintenance

  • Set up, operate, and maintain AV equipment, including projectors, microphones, sound systems and lighting systems for school functions, meetings, and classrooms.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently during live events to avoid disruptions.
  •  Ensure AV systems are fully functional and test equipment prior to events.

Event Support

  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and event organizers to understand AV needs for events such as assemblies, performances, board meetings, graduations, and sports events.
  • Provide on-site AV support for events, ensuring all systems run smoothly, including sound, video, and lighting coordination.
  •  Assist with the live streaming or recording of school events as needed.

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory

  • Regularly inspect, clean, and maintain AV equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
  •  Keep an updated inventory of all AV equipment and recommend repairs or replacements as necessary.
  •  Ensure proper storage and care of equipment after events.
  •  Report and arrange repairs or replacements for damaged equipment.

Extended Hours Flexibility

  • Be available for after-hours events, including evenings and weekends, as required.
  •  Receive additional compensation for hours worked outside of the work week schedule (40 hours).
  •  Work closely with the school district’s event coordinators to ensure AV services are provided for all planned activities outside of regular school hours.

Collaboration and Training

  • Work collaboratively with the IT team and facilities staff to integrate AV technology with other school systems.
  •  Assist in the coordination of AV needs for district-wide training and professional development sessions.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain detailed logs of equipment usage, event support, and any technical issues encountered.
  • Submit reports to the Technology Director and Operations Director regarding equipment status, upcoming needs, and any potential improvements to the AV setup.
  • Assesses the needs and plans for new technology and communicates these to the appropriate personnel. 
  • Follows ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. 
  • Provides assistance in the selection of new equipment and software. 
  • Communicates with technology vendors. 
  • Assists school personnel in securing resources for classroom and lab use. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or superintendent.

Qualifications 

Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalent (required). Associate degree or certification in AV technology, IT, or a related field (preferred). 

Minimum of 2 years in AV support, ideally in an education or event setting.

Skills and Abilities  

  •  Strong understanding of AV systems, including soundboards, microphones, projectors, video cameras, and lighting systems.
  • Familiarity with live streaming platforms and video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet).
  • Basic knowledge of networking and IT systems is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact professionally with staff, students, and event organizers.
  • Quick thinking and able to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure.
  • Ability to lift and move AV equipment and stand for extended periods during events.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, with additional compensation for extended hours.
  • Reliable and able to provide consistent AV support for all scheduled events.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to supporting the AV needs of the school district in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

 

Language 

Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondences, technical manuals, trade journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, forms, system documentation, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence. 

Computation

Must be able to collect and interpret data to evaluate program usage and instructional impact.  Basic math skills, such as addition/subtraction, multiplication/division will also be required.

Reasoning 

Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements. Ability to develop long term goals and objectives. 

Technology

Considerable knowledge of the appropriate uses of technology for instruction in various subject areas.  Knowledge of the current literature, trends and developments in the field of instructional technology will also be required.  

Additional Skills and Abilities

Requires the ability to work cooperatively with a team. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. 

Physical Demands 

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computer hardware and software, office equipment, etc. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Light Work. 

Also requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential in being available to support the needs of staff members.  Travel to and from buildings in the district, as well as travel for professional development outside the district is required.
