The Neosho School District is searching for a certified School Counselor for the 2024/2025 school year.

Interested applicants should be fully certified in the state of Missouri.

 

The school guidance program assists students in becoming responsible adults. Continuous attention is given to assisting students to develop competence in decision making, working with others, and taking responsibility for their own behavior in accordance with district policies and procedures. The Elementary Counselor will possess good people skills, flexibility, the ability to work under pressure and stay on task, responsible, reliable, a self-starter, and have the ability to adjust to change.

• Provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades K-4.
• Provide activities to meet the needs of students; consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students.
• Provide support to elementary educational programs.
• Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
• Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of education and career plans.
• Counsel small groups and individual students with problems.
• Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
• Provide a list of resources to students with several problems as to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.
• Participate in, coordinate, and/or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
• Implement the elementary guidance curriculum; conduct guidance activities in the classroom as planned in conjunction with school administrators and teachers; consult with and be a resource person for teachers to facilitate the infusion guidance learning activities into the regular education curriculum.
• Provide orientation activities for new students; participate in orientation programs for parents and students; assist students in the transition from elementary to middle school
• Inform students and parents of test results and their implications for education planning. Interpret group test results to faculty and staff; establish effective liaison with all grade levels; act as an advocate for students, as appropriate, in conjunction with faculty or staff.
• Provide resources and information to assist in career awareness and career exploration activities.
• Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified needs of individuals or groups of students. Session topics at the elementary level may include self-awareness, self-identify, academic topics, behavior and peer problems, family issues, child abuse, and substance abuse. 
• Participate in staffings and conduct in-service programs for faculty; conduct and facilitate conferences with teacher, student, and parents; conduct or provide opportunities for parent education programs and assist families with school-related problems. 
• Consult and coordinate with in-district and community agencies after consulting with the student's parents. Agencies may include school psychologists, nurse, administrators, community-based psychologists, service agencies, or physicians.
• Assist school staff in the placement of students with special needs in appropriate programs such as gifted education and special education.  
• Participate with the administration and faculty as a team member in the implementation of the district’s testing program
• Evaluate and revise the building guidance program 
• Properly supervise students at all times, if applicable to essential job functions.
• Obey all safety rules, including rules protecting the safety and welfare of students.
• Care for, properly use, and protect school property.
• Maintain courteous and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, other district employees and the public.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, department staff, all members of the school district, and community as required. 
• Provides excellence in customer service both internally and externally.
• Complies with privacy rights and safeguards confidential and/or sensitive information pertaining to staff and students.
• Reacts to change productively and receive and transmit constructive criticism as it relates to job duties.
• Actively participate in professional development and obtain skills and information necessary to effectively perform job duties.
• Conduct all official business in a professional and timely manner, utilizing district technology resources.
• Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position.
• Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
• Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties.
• Performs other duties/projects as assigned by the principal or superintendent.

 

Qualifications

Master’s degree 

Appropriate grade level guidance certification

 

Attendance

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

 

Physical Demands

An individual who holds this position must have the ability to:

• Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
• Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously
• Move around the classroom
• Read handwritten or printed material

Conditions and Environment

 

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.  Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess.
